Cartooning Books I Highly Recommend

By Ron Coleman

In my 60 plus years of cartooning, here are the cartooning how to books that I have found most useful as references. Every one of these books is on my bookshelf and I refer to them constantly. I highly recommend them.

The Animator's Survival Guide

The best book I've seen on cartoon animation, by Richard Williams, the Director of Animation on "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." A must for anyone who wants to be an animator.

Books By Jack Hamm

In my opinion the books by Jack Hamm are the most comprehensive how to draw books I have ever found. They includd a lot of illustrations but also thorough explanations as to what you need to look for in making your drawings. Here are books I strongly recommend:

Cartooning the Head and Figure

Drawing the Head and Figure

How To Draw Animals

Drawing Scenery

Drawing & Cartooning For Laughs

Another Book I Recommend with Reservations

Here is a book which was written by George Crenshaw, who for the last five years of is life was a personal friend of mine. The book is seriously outdated. Much of the information is no longer current and knowing George as I did, I suspect some of his history mentioned in the book was a bit exaggerated. But there are some good instructions here, for example he discusses several formulas for coming up with ideas, and he talks about how to simplify your drawings with eye-level perspective. There is also some good information in this book from the late Dan Rosandich, who was another friend of mine. You may not be able to find this book for very long. I believe it is out of publication and the supply could be limited.
